One peculiar item Vespasian decided to tax was human urine collected from public toilets.Īlthough the previous emperor, Nero, was the first to implement this levy, he had rescinded it after a short period. So Vespasian started to introduce new - and novel, and perhaps unexpected - taxes. “In the first place, he collected large sums from them in various ways, overlooking no source, however trivial or however reprehensible it might be, but drawing upon every source, sacred and profane alike, from which money could be secured.”īut it was still not enough. Since then, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and then copied the SSD to a newer and bigger SSD, and then upgraded again to Windows 10 (found out the Windows 8.1 key I bought was bogus but Microsoft sorted it for me) and then 11 (which requires some modifications to upgrade). I first used BootCamp (Windows 7) on a partition in an iMac, but when I bought my first cMP 1,1 (which I upgraded to a 2,1) I copied the partition to a separate SSD - it was a long time ago but I remember there being much pain to get it to work. You can read about other potential HybridMBR issues here: /gdisk/hybrid.html.īare Metal Windows might not be an option for you since you are already up and running with BootCamp though and the HybridMBR stuff might not be relevant for you either. It might not be as bad with Mojave, but there are sometimes issues such as Spotlight indexing BootCamp forever and chewing up CPU cycles. Basically, the whole BootCamp setup is a nasty hack to make Windows work for Apple by setting up "HybridMBR" disks. I know you already have Windows but I find it better to have it installed Bare Metal (without BootCamp) as there are some irritations with BootCamp. These will be near the bottom of the RefindPlus config file. ![]() You can keep and try OpenCore in this case and maybe you will see the virtues after this but if you do indeed not want it at all, just delete the OpenCore folders it creates as well as the entries for running it in the RefindPlus config. This will set both RefindPlus and OpenCore up. You say you don't want to use OpenCore so you can follow instructions on installing RefindPlus on its GitHub page but it might however be easier to use MyBootMgr, (linked in my signature below). RefindPlus is derived from rEFInd which can also be used, but rEFInd does not natively support RX 570 on cMP. You can configure it to always boot one option unless you intervene or to wait for you to make a selection each time. For a while, at least. You can install a boot manager such as RefindPlus to allow you select between Mac OS and Windows each time you boot. And besides, Apple did confirm that Intel-based Macs aren't going to go away any time soon, so there's that option. We are still quite some time away from these ARM-based devices to launch. We will have to wait and see how this transition goes. As of now, it doesn't seem like there's any way to run standard Windows within ARM-based macOS. Many Mac users use Boot Camp or virtualization software to currently run Windows for certain apps or games. What will be missed by many, however, is the ability to run x86 Windows 10 on Mac. There's far greater chance of the app you're looking for having a macOS version than a Windows 10 version for ARM. ![]() You wouldn't really be solving any problems by installing ARM-based Windows 10 on an ARM-based Mac. There is a reason why ARM-based Windows devices didn't take off, and that's no one really bothered to make any apps or games for the platform. That sounds like a bummer but it's also not that big of a loss, at least as far as support for the ARM version of Windows 10 is concerned. ![]() Microsoft currently has no plans to sell ARM versions of Windows 10 directly to customers. Although Microsoft makes an ARM-based version of Windows 10, the company currently only licenses it to OEMs to pre-install it on their devices. The second issue is with regards to Windows 10 itself. Apple demonstrated this during its WWDC keynote by running Debian 10 inside Parallels Desktop. Instead, the company expects users to run all alternate operating systems under virtualization. First of all, Apple seems to be deprecating Boot Camp entirely for its ARM-based Macs. Apple has revealed that its ARM-based Macs, coming out later this year, will not support Boot Camp for booting into alternate operating systems such as Windows 10. As I was experimenting with anchors in the plausible range, I had to consider the anchor as a possible estimate. In the Mussweiler & Strack studies, a question of whether Mahatma Gandhi died before or after the anchor precedes the estimate. A total of 5 anchors were used for each question, which included the pretest mean, +1.0SD, -1.0SD, +0.5SD and -0.5SD. The anchors used for these 10 questions were determined by the means and standard deviations of the participants’ estimates in the pretest, which was what Mussweiler & Strack had done in their studies. The 10 questions used for the main study. While it was impossible for both anchors to be the correct answer, they nonetheless had an effect on the participants, as the mean estimate from the low anchor group was 50, while the mean estimate from the high anchor group was 67. But before asking for their estimates, the researchers exposed one group to a low anchor (“Did Mahatma Gandhi died before or after the age of 9 years old?”), and exposed another group to a high anchor (“Did Mahatma Gandhi died before or after the age of 140 years old?”). One of the most popular examples is by Strack & Mussweiler (1997), who conducted a study asking participants to guess the age of Mahatma Gandhi when he died. This is especially pronounced when the individual does not have much knowledge in the subject matter that he/she is assessing, and end up getting influenced by any information that comes before the judgment. ![]() The anchoring effect is a systematic cognitive bias committed by individuals, when they rely too heavily on an initial piece of information for making a subsequent judgment. His friend, William Taylor took over the light on October 18, 1918.Īt midnight on December 6, 1918, the Nootka Lighthouse shook violently, when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck just off the coast. Smith petitioned for a transfer and happily accepted an appointment to Cape Mudge, where his daughter would be able to attend school. The cold, clammy weather at Friendly Cove wreaked havoc on Smith’s wife, and within a few years of her arrival, rheumatism had made her a confirmed invalid. His twenty-two-year-old son was left in charge of the light during his absence. Smith had emigrated from England with his eldest son and in 1912 requested leave to return to England to bring back his wife and the rest of his family. On March 15, 1911, Herbert Smith, the storekeeper turned lighthouse keeper, first exhibited the new light, produced by a fourth-order lens at a focal plane of 108 feet. The finished lighthouse measured thirty-seven feet tall from the base of its square dwelling to the top of the octagonal lantern centered on the structure’s hipped roof. Miguel group of islands lying off the entrance to Friendly Cove. Ottawa obliged, and in 1910, construction began on a lighthouse atop San Rafael Island, the middle and largest of the St. Three years later, a petition was sent to Victoria, signed by “many settlers and others involved in the shipping interests of the West Coast of Vancouver Island,” humbling praying for a light at Yuqout Point to mark Nootka Sound. In January 1906, the same month the crew of the King David was rescued, Herbert Smith, the storekeeper at Friendly Cove, established a light at the entrance to Nootka Sound to assist mariners. Their camp had been a hundred miles from Cape Beale, but just eight miles from Friendly Cove. The six were never heard from again.Īfter being marooned for thirty-three days, the shipwrecked men were about to launch another lifeboat toward Cape Beale, when they were spotted by the crew of the Queen City, outbound from Nootka Sound. Not realizing how far north they had drifted, they sent off a lifeboat with six men, including the Chief Officer, to try to reach the life station at Cape Beale. Taking to lifeboats, the crew was able to haul themselves and some provisions to a shingle beach, where they found an abandoned Indian camp. Their vessel snagged on two big knuckles of rock when its anchor slipped, and the ship had to be abandoned. After drifting northward for three days in a dense fog, they found themselves in a precarious position, stuck in the middle of Bajo Reef near Nootka Sound. On December 7, 1905, Captain Davidson and the crew of the King David spotted land and what they thought was the light at Cape Beale. Within twenty years, the British and Spanish had moved on, much to the relief of the sea otter, then on the brink of extinction. Photograph courtesy Library and Archives Canada Friendly Cove, the summer home of Chief Maquinna and the Mowachaht, was where the Spanish built a fort in 1789 and where in 1792 Captain George Vancouver and Don Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra attempted to negotiate possession of Nootka Sound. Thinking that he was asking for a sheltered anchorage, they answered, “Nootka-satl” which roughly translated means “to go around.” The name stuck.ĭue to the abundance of the coveted sea otter, Nootka Sound became a hotly contested prize between the English and Spanish. Standing on the deck of his flagship, Captain Cook asked the welcoming Mowachaht what they called the place. In 1778, Captain James Cook and his crew aboard the Resolution became the first Europeans to land in current day British Columbia.
